Discovery of disc precession in the M 31 dipping X - ray

چکیده
We present results from three XMM-Newton observations of the M31 low mass Xray binary XMMUJ004314.4+410726.3 (Bo 158), spaced over 3 days in 2004, July. Bo 158 was the first dipping LMXB to be discovered in M31. Periodic intensity dips were previously seen to occur on a 2.78-hr period, due to absorption in material that is raised out of the plane of the accretion disc. The report of these observations stated that the dip depth was anti-correlated with source intensity. However, our new observations do not favour a strict intensity dependance, but rather suggest that the dip variation is due to precession of the accretion disc. This is to be expected in LMXBs with a mass ratio . 0.3 (period . 4 hr), as the disc reaches the 3:1 resonance with the binary companion, causing elongation and precession of the disc. A smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of the disc in this system shows retrograde rotation of a disc warp on a period of 11 Porb, and prograde disc precession on a period of 29 Porb. This is consistent with the observed variation in the depth of the dips. We find that the dipping behaviour is most likely to be modified by the disc precession, hence we predict that the dipping behaviour repeats on a 81±3 hr cycle.

متن کاملDiscovery of absorption features of the ADC and systematic acceleration of the X-ray burst rate in XB1323-619
We present results from analysis of the observation of the dipping, quasi-periodic bursting low mass X-ray binary XB1323-619 made with XMM-Newton in Jan., 2003. In spectral analysis of the non-dip, non-burst EPIC PN spectrum, a number of absorption lines were discovered, notably at 6.70 and 6.98 keV which we identify with scattering by high ionization state ions Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. Such feature...

The discovery is reported of emission features in the X-ray spectrum of GROJ1655-40 obtained using RossiXTE on 1997, Feb 26. The features have been fitted firstly by two Gaussian lines, which in four spectra have average energies of 5.85± 0.08 keV and 7.32± 0.13 keV, strongly suggestive that these are the red and blue shifted wings of an iron disc line from material with velocity ∼0.33 c. The b...

متن کاملTearing up a misaligned accretion disc with a binary companion
Accretion discs are common in binary systems, and they are often found to be misaligned with respect to the binary orbit. The gravitational torque from a companion induces nodal precession in misaligned disc orbits. We calculate whether this precession is strong enough to overcome the internal disc torques communicating angular momentum. For typical parameters precession wins: the disc breaks i...
